Whitten Architects created this cozy cottage on the shores of Loon Lake in Freedom, New Hampshire, with an emphasis on indoor-outdoor flow. The proprietors’ families have deep roots in this picturesque hamlet between the Lakes Region and the White Mountains. The cottage was built for the owners to use with their three grown children.
They envisioned a house that both honored their long history in the area and reflected the diversity of their international education, including the Japanese aesthetic principle of wabi-sabi (an acceptance of the transient, flawed, and incomplete qualities of natural beauty).
There are big pines and hemlocks scattered throughout the landscape of this peaceful lakefront property. There was formerly a rundown cabin there. To take use of winter sunshine and views of the lake, the new home was built inside the footprint of the original cabin to reduce its environmental effect.
